In just a few short hours, an enduring love story of over 65 years was translated from earth to heaven.
Vera Mae (Jordan) Wingo was born in Atlanta, Ga., on May 28, 1927, to Earl and Jennie (Warren) Jordan. She departed this life on September 29, 2010. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she worked as a home maker and also worked for 26 years as the secretary of Wingo Construction. She loved the Lord and served Him in a variety of churches, singing in the choir and teaching children’s Sunday School. Even to the very end, her cheerful personality encouraged all of us. Vera is survived by two sisters, Betty Dodd and Judy McCowan.
Billy Jack Wingo was born in Springfield, Mo., on February 10, 1926, to Melvin and Ethel (Holbert) Wingo. He departed this life on September 30, 2010. Billy was a World War II Navy Veteran, who served in the South Pacific. While home on a short leave, he and Vera were married on August 12, 1945. After the war, he worked as a brick mason for over 55 years, serving as president of the local bricklayers’ union for about 10 years. In 1979, he helped in the formation of Wingo Construction Company and served as its vice president for 26 years. Billy served in the capacity of deacon and music leader in several area churches. Serving the Lord and serving his family were always high priorities to him. In his retirement years, he enjoyed playing golf with his friends in “the rocking chair league” of Greene Hills.
Billy and Vera are survived by two daughters, Beverly Sumner and Belinda and Paul McLaughlin; two sons, Jack Wingo and Richard and Kathy Wingo; grandchildren, Jennie McCullough, Casey Sumner and Ben Wingo; great-grandchildren, Heather Sumner, Jimmy McCullough, and Kylie Sumner; and a host of nieces and nephews.
