Warren Eugene (Gene) Mitchell, Jr., 62, of Strafford, MO, passed away at home on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at 8:30 a.m. from cancer.
He was born December 1, 1947 in Springfield, MO, the son of the late Warren Mitchell, Sr. and Bonna (Keltner) Mitchell.
After serving in Vietnam in 1968, he returned to the states to marry Janice Deanna (Tilton) Mitchell, Springfield, MO on August 30, 1969. He was last employed with Building Regulations in the Historic Greene County Courthouse and enjoyed the many friendships he had with his co-workers. Some of his hobbies included barbequing, auto racing, fishing and camping. Gene served as deacon from 1969 – 1989 for United Baptist Church, Springfield, MO pastored by the late Bro. Tom McGath. He was a faithful member of Berean Baptist Church, Springfield, MO since 2004 – present. One of his proudest achievements was being Commander of VFW Post 7214, Strafford, MO and then serving as District Commander of Southwest Missouri. However, his greatest joy was his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Deanna Mitchell of Strafford, MO; three sons, Greg Mitchell and wife, Jennifer, Republic, MO; Kevin Mitchell and wife, Becky, Sardinia, OH and Todd Mitchell, Strafford, MO; two brothers, Ted Mitchell, Billings, MO and Stacy Mitchell, Hollister, MO; five granddaughters and two grandsons.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, June 27, 2010 and the funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m., Monday, June 28, 2010, at Greenlawn East Funeral Home. Bro. Jeff Ables and Bro. Jeff Copes will officiate. Burial will follow in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery of Springfield, MO.
